One of the top scientists in the field of Applied Physics, Professor KarunaKar Nanda, has taken over the charge of Director, Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar, on 16.06.2021. Before joining as Director at IOP, Prof. Nanda served at India’s one of the premium research Institute, namely, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in different capacities for 16 long years since 2005. Prof. Nanda has published 150+ research papers last ten years and featured in the World’s top 2% Scientists 2020 in the category of Applied Physics published by Stanford University researchers. He has received many accolades for his research contributions, namely, the prestigious JSPS invitation fellowship by JSPS, Japan, MRSI lecture medal by MRSI, India and Samanta Chandrasekhar award by Odisha Bigyan Academy.
Prof. Nanda, along with his teams, made many outstanding contributions to the country’s energy sectors, gas sensing materials for environmental, and materials for UV and IR detection. Prof. Nanda is the only son of Sri Damodar Nanda of a remote village of Boudh district and did his schooling at Khatakhatia Primary School, matriculation from Palasogora and graduated from Sonepur College. Coincidently, he did his doctoral degree from the Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar, after his post-graduation from Sambalpur University. He also worked as Guest Scientist at Gerhard Mercator University, Duisburg, Germany, Senior post-doc fellow at Dublin City University, Ireland, before joining at IISc., Bangalore.
