BHOPAL: Globally one in two adults with diabetes is undiagnosed. It makes them particularly susceptible to the complications of the condition, causing substantial disability and premature death.  In Bhopal the majority of diabetics are Type 2 diabetics. Up to 70 per cent of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed by adopting healthier lifestyles.

Dr. Sachin Kumar Gupta, consultant Diabetologist Krishna Diabetes Clinic & Educational Research Centre Bhopal said, “Diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation.

Over one third of the masses currently living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes will develop some form of damage to their eyes that can lead to blindness.

Many people live with type 2 diabetes for a long period of time without being aware of their condition.

By the time of diagnosis, diabetes complications may already be present. It is surprising to see that 80 per cent of diabetics do not take proper treatment. Sometimes they stop treatment and switch to alternative systems of treatment and even not bothered to up titrate their medicine as per their blood sugar level because diabetes is painless in early stage”.

Dr Sachin Chittawar, endocrinologist, GMC, said that India has already crossed the projection of 65 million of 2030 in 2016 and has reached 79 million which is 119 per cent more. “The problem is not with the disease but with the lifestyle. Most of the diabetes is caused due to the improper lifestyle and bad eating habits. People eat randomly, uncontrolled and do not prefer any physical exercise. There is another form which is developing is the pre-diabetes. Under pre-diabetes one does not actually acquires diabetes but reaches a stage after which he/she can get diabetes if proper precaution is not taken. But it is mostly misunderstood that pre-diabetes is a type of diabetes. It is a stage. Not necessarily everyone will need medication in this stage. Following a proper routine and proper diet can save anyone from diabetes”, he said.

The theme of World Diabetes Day 2016 is Eyes on Diabetes. The patient should be made aware on promoting the importance of screening of eyes to prevent diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to diminution of vision and even blindness.’
