BHOPAL : Private colleges, through their association, will launch a drive in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Assam to get students for engineering courses in session 2015-16.

“The association has decided to launch an intensive drive for encouraging students to take up engineering courses inside and outside the state with the help of department of higher education and technical education,” President of Association of Technical Professional Institute JN Chokse and Secretary BS Yadav told media persons.

Last year, 47,000 out of 1.13 lakh seats in engineering colleges remained vacant.

The due said the association was going to focus on students and promote admissions to engineering colleges with improvement in quality of teaching, following a slow-down over the last two years.

In coming the session, the colleges will surrender 25,000 seats including seats of 13 colleges which will be shut down.

“The association, in collaboration with directorate of technical education and school education, conducted awareness drive in schools to motivate higher secondary students to pursue career in engineering. A day long training programme will be held in Bhopal. IIIT professor Dr Deshmukh will impart information about improvement in technical education,” Yadav said.

In May, the association will organise interactive session for students in which human resource managers of prominent companies will participate. They will inform the student about employment opportunities in the engineering sector.

They said private engineering colleges demanded reduction in affiliation fee and central placement facility by RGPV and use of development fee for welfare of students. “Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishwavidyalaya collects Rs 580 per year from each student for development fee from four lakh students. The fund is not used for students. Last year, 42 students pursuing technical education in different colleges in Bhopal died due to different reasons.

No help was given by the university to them or their families,” they said.

‘CM only gives hollow assurances’

The association members said several taxes were imposed on private colleges including property tax despite their financial difficulties in running colleges. They met chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in this regard and he agreed with the reasonableness of their demand but no action was taken by the state government. The chief minister gave empty assurance. The members said Municipal Corporation slapped notices on private colleges for payment of solid waste management tax even for empty plots. The corporation did not provide services for solid waste treatment to these colleges. They said they would soon meet union MHRD minister in Delhi to apprise her of their logical complaints and issues.
