BHOPAL : Expressing deep concern over the sharp rise in the incidents of students committing suicide during the examination season, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh, on Friday, announced constitution of a House committee to hold exhaustive consultations with experts to find ways to check the trend.

He was intervening in the discussion on a call-attention motion on suicides of students. Speaker Dr Sitasharan Sharma will constitute the committee in consultation with the MLAs.Congress MLAs Ramniwas Rawat and Arif Aqueel had tabled the motion. The motion made pointed reference to the suicide of Aditya Maan Singh, who had hanged self after the school management threatened to expel him as he had failed his eleventh grade exam.

Both the Congress MLAs said that Aditya was a first rank-holder till class ten and a talented singer. He had also       participated in Indian Idol show. The school management did not do justice to him. CM said, “Only marks obtained in the examinations should not be the parameter to judge the talent of the students. Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had also failed in his school examination. Albert Einstein, Sachin Tendulkar and Mahatma Gandhi were never extraordinary students but they went to become great men and excelled in their respective fields.”

CM said, “Yoga, with emphasis on meditation, should be incorporated in the school syllabi as it is a good tool to make the students stress-free. Besides, sports should be made mandatory in the schools and there must be counselling for the students from class nine onwards.” The CM also stressed on running vocational courses in higher classes.

The CM said that a large number of parents send their wards to Kota to join coaching institutes for IIT JEE and other examinations. But situation there was also serious and students keep on committing suicide there too. He said that there is undue pressure on students to score higher and still higher marks. “This is a social crime which I cannot tolerate”, the CM added.

224 student suicides in 2014

Minister of State for School Education Deepak Joshi said, “As many as 193 students committed suicide in 2012, 218 in 2013 and 224 students committed suicide in 2014 as per the police records.”
