Bhopal: More than 60 percent students in age-group of 14-18 years studying in government schools in rural areas of Bhopal district cannot read simple English sentences like, “What is the time?” and “She has many books”.
Similarly, 70 percent of students of same age group studying in rural areas of Rewa district cannot read simple English sentences like, “This is a large book” or “I like to read”. This has been revealed in the findings of a survey conducted by The Annual Status of Education Report (NGO) in 2017. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) had conducted survey in 60 villages of Bhopal and Rewa district.
The survey results point out that standard of education in Madhya Pradesh is way below the mark compared to other states including neighbouring Chhattisgarh. The students are not good at Hindi either. As per the survey result, 37 percent of students in rural areas of Bhopal district cannot read class II Hindi text books properly. In Rewa district, this number is 41 percent.
In Bhopal district, 95 percent of rural youths did not opt for higher education. In Rewa district, this number is around 97 percent. The survey results also point out that over 55 percent of mothers and 26 percent of fathers living in rural areas in Bhopal district haven’t gone to school. In Rewa district, more than 58 percent of mothers and 23 percent of fathers did not go to school.
In rural areas of Bhopal district, only 2.2 percent of mothers have received education above class X. This figure stands at 5.9 percent in Rewa district. In rural Bhopal, 13 percent of fathers have received education above class X. In rural Rewa, this number is 31.8 percent.
