Workshop on ‘social media for law and order’ at Makhanlal Chaturvedi varsity
BHOPAL: Director general of police (DGP) Rishi Kumar Shukla said everyone in the society has his own perception of truth.
People assume partial truth as complete truth and forward it on social media. Engrossed in their own partial truth they are averse to the partly true belief of others.
The social media is a medium in which we have no control over something after it is disseminated. There is no certainty how would it be presented before the society and its impact. Many times the senselessly forwarded half truth causes tension in the society. The DGP on Monday was addressing the inaugural session of a two-day workshop on social media for law and order organised by Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication.
There is no system in social media of editing a message leaving widespread impact on the society. It is imperative to implement a system to balance thoughts and information spread through social media, said Shukla.
Guest of honour and special director general of police Swarnajeet Singh said the Indian constitution allows us freedom of expression. But to what extent should this freedom be used and should we not think that we are hurting others by our thoughts? If we think about these things we would know what is the limit of freedom of expression? Formulating a law for social media does not mean that freedom of expression would be curbed but it is for us to respect feelings of others.
