Morena : Chambal river has swelled up due to release of water from Gandhi Sagar Dam. The river is flowing above danger level and all traffic has been stopped. The direct connection between Gwalior and Agra has been cut off. Alert has also been sounded in the villages in adjoining areas of the river. The situation is expected to remain so in next two days.
The Gandhi Sagar Dam is full to the brim due to heavy rains in catchment areas. All the gates of the dam have been opened; some 10 lakh cusec water has been released from the dam which is flowing to Chambal river through Kota barrage. Administration was informed of the situation last evening after which an alert was sounded in villages.
As the water level was steadily climbing the traffic was stopped at Rajghat bridge. The river was flowing at above danger level at 138 meters on Monday afternoon. SP, Morena reached the spot and after discussions with officials of Rajasthan government, traffic was stopped on the bridge. The bridge is quite old and in a dilapidated shape.
The administration has put up barricades at Dhaulpur and Morena and people are being advised to travel by train or via Bhind. Long queues of vehicles have formed on either sides of road. Bus passengers were seen crossing the bridge on foot.
