Bhopal: Bhopal Municipal Corporation is geared up to make Bhopal number one city of the country in upcoming Cleanliness Survey. However, situation inside hostels of Gandhi Medical College present an entire picture.

The hostels inside one of the premier and oldest 1,200 bed medical college have turned into garbage dumping ground. Polythene, plastic bottles and other garbage can be found littered around. The entire premises is in a bad shape.

Free Press visited Block- B and Block- E hostel to get a first hand information of the ground situation. The tap from which students drink water was filthy and the area around it was filled with rubbish. The mess area in Block-E Hostel too was dirty.  Garbage was dumped in the open in hostels. Garbage was also found littered outside rooms of hostel inmates. Foul smell was emanating from toilets.

Not a single dustbin was found in hostel area. Besides, water coolers were lying defunct in hostel’s hall. Stairs had red stains of gutkha and paan masala. Bottles of alcohol, detergent and other cleaning material were dumped beneath the staircase. Due to lack of security and safety measure, anyone can enter the hostel. The boundary, three-feet in height too are not of much use.

A notice about lost laptop of a senior student was found pasted on wall of block-B hostel. No guard was present at the gate. Sanjay Jain, PRO of Gandhi Medical College said, “We have provided dustbin of the BMC in hostels but students pulled them inside their rooms. They are so educated but they behave in strange manner. It is shameful.”
