Bhopal: State police department is all set upgrade the weaponry system for the field force. The department is planning to purchase 5500 pistols for their head constables engaged in field work. IG (Provisions) Sahid Absar told this correspondent that the department was feeling the need for replacing big and long barrel guns since long time. It is inconvenient for the field staff to carry the old guns to field for maintaining law and order situation, he said.

The total requirement of pistol is around 18,000 and the department has already purchased 2000 pistols and now planning to buy 5,500 pistols more form the government ordinance factory Kolkata. In first phase, the new weapon will be given to staff posted in four metros – Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior and Jabalpur. In the next phase other cities will be selected, IG Absar said.

The new pistol is 9MM bore and have a deadly range of 50 metres with 12 rounds. They can be rapidly fired without loading each time.
The long barrel guns take time for loading and they are not convenient to use in crowded areas, the police official said. The INSAS rifle or SLR is useful for army and other armed forces and not suitable for civil policing. The use of these rifles is one bullet and one man, but for the civil policing it is used because there are no other options, the IG said.

According to UNO protocol, big barrel rifles are banned for civil policing. In developed countries, they are not even using the guns. They are using other methods for controlling criminals. The ATS, STF and SAF are using ultra modern weapons. These weapons have long range accuracy and helpful to hit notorious and anti national elements.
