Bhopal: ‘Neki ki Deewar’ – a lofty concept aimed at helping the needy by providing them an opportunity to use goods which others do not need – has failed to pick up attraction for want of adequate publicity and government support.

The idea behind the concept was that the donor and recipient both would remain anonymous. Those who did not need anything – clothes, toys, household items, books and so on – were supposed to just leave it at the Neki Ki Deewar (wall of kindness) and those who needed them, could pick them at time of their choice.

For a couple of months after it was launched in September 2016, the concept was truly serving its purpose as residents used to donate extra clothes, shoes or other things in it which was then randomly picked by the needy persons.

The process is still on but the fervour missing, reason being the lack of publicity.

The place which wears a deserted look now used to have a banner indicating its purpose and there were regular visitors as well. The banner which has been carried away by wind was the sign of this generous act, said a member of Adarsh Agrawal Samaj who along with others had led the task.

“We introduced the concept to help the needy without putting burden on anyone. The idea revolved around channelising things which worked perfectly as donors would donate here everything they found useless”, said Mahesh Agarwal of the Samaj.
The process can yield better results if we receive a place where seasonal changes can’t affect the set up. A parking stand which is no longer in use by government can be a better place to store the stuff, he adds.

Here, in open the clothes can be damaged by rain or a heavy blow of wind can disturb the entire set up.

We are not expecting anything from the government accept space as it is a work of mutual cooperation, he said adding that the public is ready to donate things as there is no loss to it in giving such materials for social causes.
