BHOPAL: Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to demolish the iconic Bhoot Bungalow here. The building, now unoccupied and derelict, is situated at Shahjahanabad. BMC cited its dilapidated state as the reason for the decision before the district magistrate on Tuesday.

On April 1, a woman was allegedly killed by her husband inside Bhoot Bungalow after an altercation between them. After dusk, the building usually fills up with drunkards and drug addicts who also create problems for the passers-by.

The decision of razing the building spread in a sprawling 1.22 lakh sq.ft area was taken by BMC officials during a meeting with the district magistrate and owner of the building.

“The decision was taken by mayor Alok Sharma in public welfare as it was posing grave danger to the safety of the people due to its dilapidated condition. The building, which is about 100 years old, was also left unused for more than half a century. During the meeting with the district magistrate, owner of the building Chaganlal Agrawal agreed to the decision,” said public relation officer of BMC Harish Gupta while addressing media persons present at the site. Gupta further added that other than being in a dilapidated condition, the mansion had turned into a den of anti-social elements.

“The building was a no-go zone for any common man for all the wrong reasons. With the recent murder of a woman inside it, it became highly dangerous for the residents of nearby areas. Initially the owner of the property was unhappy with the decision but later he too agreed for the sake of public welfare,” said Gupta adding the demolition work carried out by three BMC bulldozers would continue on Wednesday till it was completely razed.
