Bhopal: Guru Purnima was celebrated in the City of Lakes with great fervour and devotion on Monday. Dedicated to spiritual gurus, mentors and acharyas/teachers, the day holds a special importance for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists alike. Various programmes were organised at different places in the city including Buddha Vihar, Karundham temple, Jain temples, Katyani Shaktipeeth, Maa Chamunda Bhawan, Manas Udyan etc. Some also shared teachings of Gautam Buddha, as it is believed that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this auspicious day.
The day is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Ashadh. In some parts of India, it is also called Ved Vyas puja (after Vyas muni) or Buddha Purnima, since on this day Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath. This day is celebrated to acknowledge guru’s presence and selfless motivation and guidance in the student or disciple’s life. It is bestowed upon the teachers for their commitment towards imparting knowledge and illuminating lives with wisdom.
