BHOPAL: The jail department awaits the government to sanction more than Rs 20 crore to install the security system in the jail of the state.
To upgrade a jail equipping it with new high security a sum of Rs 15 crore is needed, while to upgrade the state detention centres it takes more than Rs 5 crore. The prospective plans have been prepared by the jail department of the state and sent to the government a month back for the approvals. The height of security walls would be increased, along with stretching barbed-wire fencing, construction of guard room and visitor rooms at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The department has already started conducting the security works worth Rs 7 crores, but falling short of Rs 3 crore.
Under the technical security measures, the installation of CCTV cameras, metal detector, biometric system, siren, vehicles are required. The department has prepared the budget for Rs 270 lakh.
For the under-construction new jail in Indore, an amount of Rs 15 crore is needed to upgrade it into the high security facility. Another jail in Burhanpur is also under construction.
In the SIMI jailbreak incident in the night of Dipawali, on October 31 last year, eight SIMI activists escaped from Bhopal Central Jail after killing a head warder.
Since then the department is planning to upgrade the security system of the jails and also to do away with the security lapses. But on the monetary side the jail department is facing usual crisis. The plans are prepared but the department keeps on waiting for financial approvals to execute the planning.
