Even as the city of lakes stares at impending water crisis in next coming days, the authorities are yet to act upon people and firms engaged in criminal waste of the water. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to penalize people wasting potable water for washing their vehicles. Even the big construction projects of the civic body as well other agencies are also consuming a good amount of water at a time when the threat of drinking water scarcity looms large over the city.
As per data, use of water goes up to some 6 lakh gallon per day in all the big government and private undergoing projects. To add to this, the authorities have failed to plug the water leakage, which crosses 75000 liter in a month. The municipal body has been quite callous when it comes to fixing the leakages to check water loss. It takes its own sweet time to address any complaint and till then, the loss of precious potable continues.
BMC’s bid construction projects like Smart Road, Rani Kamlapati Arch Bridge, Boulevard street etc are underway and they consumes gallons of water per day. Sources said that BMC is even supplying portable water in gardens and in areas where it is unable to transport raw water. Water level in Upper Lake is receding fast. In next couple of days the situation is all set to become grave in the Old City and adjoining areas which solely depends on the lake. Kerwa and other water sources are not having lines to supply water in old city. While supplying gallons of water for its ongoing projects, the civic authorities need to consider the approaching grave scenario.
Sunil Shrivastava , an engineer retired from BMC, expressing concern over depleting water level in city, said that there is need to take serious note over the wastage of water as the water sources are drying up everywhere in the state. The authorities as well as people should ensure judicious use of the precious resource, he added
BMC should initiate action against people drawing water using pumps and against those found using potable water was washing vehicles, said Shrivastava. Municipal body should impose fine on people violating the rules as potable water is supplied for household work, he said.
Soon penalty for wasting water
BMC commissioner B Vijay Dutta said municipal body is taking water wastage very seriously and soon would start with imposing fine on people found wasting potable water supplied for household work.
