Bhopal: The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), has failed to keep the modular toilets intact. These toilets are set up in such areas where residents do not have the facility at their houses. Due to poor maintenance by the civic body, these toilets have become useless.

The survey on cleanliness for the year is about to begin and the civic body is yet to maintain cleanliness of these toilets installed in slums areas in order to prevent open defecation and get Open Defecation Free (ODF) tag.
The BMC had installed over 4000 such toilets two years ago. However, lack of maintenance left these toilets in unusable state. In areas where personal toilets were built, the civic body withdrew toilets and those toilets left in slums are not usable.

These toilets were already in controversy as they were procured sans legal tender and a council meet. The toilets were withdrawn from those areas where its condition worsened after the BMC was unwilling to maintain it. However, the BMC removed the toilets saying that the household have toilets in those areas.

“We have removed the toilets from those areas where domestic toilets have been constructed,” said Harshit Tiwari, BMC deputy commissioner. Leader of opposition in the BMC, Mohammad Sageer said the BMC officials should clarify where the used toilets are dumped.  He further said that he will raise the issue in the council meet as these toilets were purchased sans legal tender and still the officials are not providing data of the status of those toilets which were earlier installed but were removed sans permission.
