Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has intensified its campaign to get a non-permanent seat in the United Nations’ Security Council in 2015, a media report said here Friday.

Malaysia’s national news agency quoted Hussein Haniff, Malaysia’s permanent representative to the UN, as saying that aside from the work related to global issues such as sustainable development, which has been a key issue at the UN, Malaysia has been calling for UN reforms, reported Xinhua.

“We have also been proactively lobbying for a non-permanent seat for Malaysia in the United Nations’ Security Council in 2015. We need to get two-third of the votes in the General Assembly for a non-permanent membership of the United Nations’ Security Council.

“We are the only candidate from Asia, so far for a United Nations’ Security Council non-permanent seat,” he added.

Malaysia’s candidature was proposed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations group last year, a move which further strengthened Malaysia’s case.
