People often believe pursuing a degree from reputed universities and colleges can make them better candidates in the job market. However, Dr Marika Niihori, a woman who studied and graduated with a PhD from the prestigious Cambridge University revealed she faced over 70 rejections while looking for work.

PhD scholar struggles to find job

Niihori admitted job search was not as easy as she believed it would be for someone like her who had a PhD, that too from Cambridge University.

"Didn’t expect the job search to be this tough"

"I didn’t expect the job search to be this tough. It didn’t help that everyone kept saying, “A PhD will open so many doors,” when the reality really wasn’t the case", she wrote on Instagram.

"After 70+ job rejections I thought I'd never find a job", Niihori expressed in her post while almost breaking into tears. "We did it", she said with joy, informing people she had just signed her first job contract after a long and tedious job hunt.

It was learned she achieved a PhD in Physics last October. She joined a Biotech startup company earlier this year.

According to her social media posts, the scholar is based in London. She is dealing with mental health issues and loneliness.

"I’m constantly battling that feeling of loneliness, even in a city like London, where everyone seems to be on their own path. There’s never a day like high school or university where you get to hang out with your friends every day, and that hits hard", Niihori posted.

Netizens react

Noting it was not easy for the woman to get a job despite having a high academic qualification, netizens reacted to the difficult time and said, "Job hunting is REALLY DIFFICULT at the moment. Don’t beat yourself up". "You are still young. Times are hard. Focus", commented another.
