French star midfielder Paul Pogba became the latest sports celebrity to snub an official sponsor at Euro 2020 after he removed a bottle of Heineken beer from his post match press conference after France’s Groud F match against Germany on Tuesday.
The European Championships have multiple sponsors, including Dutch beverage giants Heineken. But the star midfielder, who converted to Islam in 2019, didn’t seem happy with the bottle placed right in front of him.
Pogba is not the first Muslim sportsperson to openly display their reluctance towards promoting anything involving alcohol. England cricketers Moeen Ali and Rashid Khan fled from champagne celebrations, when England lifted the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Pogba on many ocassion has expressed his religious belief, the midfielder recently went on to continue with a Europa League tie despite being on fast during Ramadan. He has also publicly stated that he doesn't consume alcohol in any form.
The move by the Manchester United star comes a day after Ronaldo removed Coca-Cola bottles placed on his table. Ronaldo's move saw a significant dip in the beverage's stock value and is reported to be at least $4 billion.
