Raut, Mohile shocked Mandar Chiplunkar wins thriller

Mumbai : Midget boys third seed Vivaan Mohile and fourth seed Kalpak Raut suffered shock defeats in the Li Ning 4 Star All Mumbai Table Tennis Tournament, at the NSCI, Worli, on Saturday.

The underdogs enjoyed a rewarding opening day as Kushal Patel upset Mohile 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 in an exciting quarter-final, while Yashas Todi stunned Raut 11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 in a tight pre-quarter-final contest en route to the semi-finals. Todi later overcame Chaitanya Ahuja 3-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-7, 11-7 in another close quarter-final encounter.  Exciting action continued in the sub junior boys third round with one of Mumbai’s top juniors Mandar Chiplunkar of Lalbaug living dangerously before snatching a thrilling 4-11, 11-7, 5-11, 14-12, 11-2 win over Yohan Mehta to advance to the pre-quarter-finals along with fifth seed Atharva Kurade who got past unseeded Krish Kalrani in another 3-2 thriller.

The tournament is being held under the auspices of the MCDTTA and MSDTTA and includes categories for men, women, veterans, midget, cadet, sub junior, junior, youth boys and girls and men’s team championship.
