Mumbai : A 21-year-old youth allegedly vandalised a church in Bhandup in the wee hours of Monday for which the police placed him under arrest and launched a manhunt for his brother, who was his alleged accomplice.
The accused, identified as Paulraj Nadar, had allegedly vandalised the St Anthony Church at Tembipada at 1 am on Monday along with his brother Dinakaran. The two were supposedly inebriated when the incident took place.
“The two accused persons, in an intoxicated condition, had been creating a ruckus outside the church. The father of the parish told them to behave and asked them to leave the place when Paulraj allegedly broke the glass casket of a statue with his hand,” an officer attached with the Bhandup police said.
The police ruled out any communal angle in the incident as the issue arised out of a personal enmity between Paulraj and Dinakaran and a group of other people living in the locality.
The siblings had allegedly come to pick a fight with the rival group in the area when, in a fit of rage, they also vandalised the church, after getting rebuked by the father. While Paulraj was traced down on Monday morning after the management of the church registered a complaint with the police, the search for his brother is on.
