Thane: The Kalyan Bazarpeth police on Thursday arrested five persons for allegedly illegal construction of chawl rooms behind the National Urdu School in Kalyan. Notably, three persons, including a 3-year-old boy, died while one suffered injuries when a compound wall of the National Urdu School collapsed adjoining a chawl rooms due to heavy downpour in Kalyan. The incident took place in Durgadi Killa, Kalyan near bail bazar on Monday around 12.25am. Police said the five arrested persons have been identified as Iqbal Maulavi, Amjad Maulavi, Salim Maulavi, Salman Maulavi and Javed Maulavi. They had built chawls behind the school.
Yaswant Chavan, senior inspector, Bazarpeth police station said, “We arrested the five accused and produced them in a court, which remanded them in police custody until July 6.” Police sources said they built the rooms without proper Kalyan Dombivli Muncipal Corporation (KDMC) permission. Reportedly, Hussain Mohammed Chand (3), Karima Mohammed Chand (30) and Sobha Kacharu Kamble (60) died in the wall collapse while Aarti (16) was injured. Prasad Thakur, PRO, KDMC said, “We evacuated occupants of 20-25 rooms, built here illegally 10 years ago. We provided them with government shelter rooms for their safe stay.”
