Mumbai: Senior bureaucrat UPS Madan has been elevated as the Chief Secretary (CS) of the state. The general administration department (GAD) issued an order to this effect on Tuesday. The 1983 batch IAS officer is currently posted in the finance department as the additional chief secretary.
Madan will replace D K Jain as Jain has been appointed as the member of the Lokpal panel, the post recently created by the Union government. Ajoy Mehta (IAS 1983 batch), commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was also in the race for the top post. But, on the ground of seniority, Madan has been promoted.
He will serve for next six months till his retirement in September this year. Madan has served as Commissioner of the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) which is headed by the chief minister. He had also worked as the Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra.
The incumbent chief secretary, D K Jain, was on extension. Jain, who was due to retire in January this year, was given an extension for period of three months. Jain, who has been appointed as a member of the Lokpal panel, has left for Delhi this evening.
