Mumbai : Even though Mumbai’s Modak Sagar and Tulsi lakes overflowed this week, the BMC administration is reluctant to review its water cut policy.
Earlier this week, an official from the BMC’s hydraulic department had confirmed that the BMC will continue the 20% cut in water supply until October 1. He had said that the administration will review its policy as planned earlier, on October 1.
Due to considerable rainfall during the past four days, the lake water stock has risen to 11,39,635 million litres. The water level was 14,31,566 million litres at this time last year.
Due to a 32% shortage in availability of water for the city, the BMC had decided to enforce 20% water cut for residential areas and 50% water cuts for malls and hotels. However, two lakes overflowed by Tuesday allaying Mumbaiites’ fears.
Yashodhar Phanse, Standing Committee Chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) wrote to BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Wednesday requesting the administration to reconsider its water cut policy and reduce the cut by 10%. He requested the administration to look into the matter urgently.
When contacted, BMC’s spokesperson said: “We are watching the situation on a daily basis.”
