Mumbai : Primary teachers of unaided Catholic schools in the city that come under Archdiocesan Board Education (ABE) announced on Tuesday to protest against the school management, ABE and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Teachers Day as their schools allegedly have not been paid arrears and gratuity.
Ruhi Kapoor of ABE teachers union said, “If the protest doesn’t work. We should keep the final option of knocking the doors of judiciary for our rights.” She was speaking at the gathering of affected teachers at Mahim Gymkhana.
Ruhi claimed, “About 2,000 working and retired teachers from nearly 150 unaided private catholic schools are affected. They have not received their arrears since April 2005 and dearness allowance since January 2010 totaling Rs.300 cr. Time and again we have approached our management, ABE, BMC, state education department regarding the outstanding amount, but there is no tangible result.”
A total of 80 affected teachers from various catholic schools attended the meeting to decide future action plan to get justice.
One teacher, on a condition of anonymity said, “Catholic school have increased fees in the name of teachers’ salaries. Parents paid the hiked fees, but management has not passed on the benefits to us. It is a case of cheating parents as well as with teachers.”
