While cybercrime and social media addiction were one of the most common causes people ran for in the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025, a group of youngsters representing a non-governmental organisation ran for the cause of spreading digital literacy in the country.

Vidya, an NGO working to empower students through education in various fields, participated in the 20th edition of Tata Mumbai Marathon to spread the cause of digital literacy. The organisation, which has been educating underprivileged students living in slum settlement since 1985, advocated for digital education to transform the education landscape of the country.

The Powai-based NGO is about to complete 40 years and runs 250 educational projects across the country benefitting around 5 lakh students. These projects, mainly to educate students with curricular and co-curricular subjects, also runs initiatives to empower women through its teaching, tailoring and makeup courses.

On Sunday, 25 volunteers from the organisation’ youth forum participated in the marathon advocating for digital resources to educate the youth and provide them with employment opportunities. The youth forum helps underprivileged students with crash course related to computer education, sports, dance and music.

Talking to The Free Press Journal, Gaurav Sharma, leader of Vidya’s Alumni Cell, said, “Digitalisation is the biggest revolution ever and it is a booster to everyone’s life. While people can benefit from this revolution through various means, we want to use this as a chance to spread more education among the underprivileged community.”
