In what it might be called as good news for South Mumbai residents, SoBo might get its first cable car ropeway. According to DNA, a corporator representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) proposed the idea of having a ropeway installed from Malabar Hill to Nariman Point via the Girgaon Chowpatty area. Jyotsna Mehta, the BJP corporator from Malabar Hill working for the civic body’s D ward, said that this can be a good tourist attraction, as well as it will give people a bird’s eye view of the southern part of the city.
The proposal will be taken up for discussion during BMC’s general body meeting in May. “The ropeway will make South Mumbai a bigger attraction. We have a number of examples where cable cars were made functional and people are using it. This will also add to the beauty of the city,” Jyotsna Mehta told the leading daily. She also asked, “If Rishikesh, Kashmir, and even Saptarshi – a small tourist spot in Gujarat – can have ropeways, why can’t Mumbai?”
BMC officials have said that even if the proposal gets an approval from the corporation, it will also require permission from the state government. A senior civic official told the DNA, “We need to check whether there is sufficient space at both ends to install the ropeway. We will need space for parking, as well as other amenities.”
