Report suggests that the BMC should set up check points outside every dumping ground to keep tab on how many truck loads of silt and garbage is dumped in the ground
Mumbai : The five-member committee formed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation last week to probe into pre-monsoon desilting work of nullahs could not come to a conclusion about its findings before the stipulated deadline of June 30. It has been given an extension up to August 17 to submit the report.
The committee headed by deputy municipal commissioner Prakash Patil submitted an interim report on Wednesday but asked for more time to come out with the final report as the scope of their work is vast.
The committee’s interim report indicates that it is difficult to weigh the amount of silt and garbage dumped in the dumping grounds allotted to contractors as these were open to all and anyone could have dumped garbage there. There is also no way to match the amount of garbage collected from nullahs with the amount dumped in the dumping grounds.
The committee, which was set up by BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta amid allegations of corruption and poor quality pre-monsoon work undertaken by contractors, came out with a framework to carry out its work henceforth. It also outlined areas that need more attention during the probe.
The report suggested that the BMC should set up check points outside every dumping ground to keep tab on how many truckloads of silt and garbage is dumped in the ground. It has suggested that geo fencing should be done around the dumping grounds to demarcate their boundaries clearly and all this data should be published on the BMC’s website to maintain transparency.
