In a swift and determined move to enforce the state’s plastic ban, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) conducted a large-scale action on April 17, seizing over 3,500 kilograms of banned plastic items and collecting ₹25,000 in fines from violators.
The action was carried out across all zones of Panvel under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Mangesh Chitale, and the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate. The crackdown included surprise inspections and raids at shops, warehouses, and commercial establishments.
The seized items included single-use plastic bags, non-woven polypropylene bags below 60 GSM, and disposable cutlery—all prohibited under the plastic ban in effect since March 2018.
PMC has appealed to citizens to support the initiative by using alternatives such as paper or cloth bags. Officials also reminded retailers that use of compostable plastic items is permitted only if certified by the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The civic body has affirmed that such enforcement drives will continue regularly to ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations.
Zone-wise Seizures and Penalties:
Kamothe Ward: 300 kg of plastic items including spoons, cups, plates, and glasses were seized. A fine of ₹10,000 was collected.
Navade Subdivision: A major warehouse was raided, leading to the seizure of 1,850 kg of plastic.
Kharghar Ward (A): 250 kg plastic seized; ₹5,000 fine collected.
Kalamboli Ward (B): 450 kg seized; ₹5,000 penalty imposed.
Panvel Ward (D): 650 kg of banned plastic seized; ₹5,000 fine collected.
