The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is cracking down on encroachments and unauthorized constructions in the city and demolished structures in Koparkhairane and Ghansoli wards on Tuesday.

According to officials from the anti-encroachment department of NMMC, house no 1149 in Sector 12D in Koparkhairane ward carried out construction without any prior permission of the corporation. A notice under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966 was issued by the Koparkhairane ward office, asking to remove the illegal portion. But they continued unauthorized construction.

Finally, the Koparkhairane ward conducted a crackdown on the unauthorized construction and removed the unauthorized construction. "Officers and staff of Koparkhairane ward carried out the operation with the help of 8 laborers, 2 breakers, 1 gas cutter and 1 pickup van as well as a police squad from the encroachment department," said an official from the civic anti-encroachment department.

Similarly, a ground floor building at Arjunwadi, near Nala near Sector 25 in Ghansoli ward was being constructed without any prior permission of the corporation. A notice under Section 54 of the MRTP Act, 1966 was issued by the Ghansoli ward office to demolish the illegal structure. However, instead of removing the illegal structures, they continued the construction. Finally the civic body demolished the structure.

A senior official from the anti-encroachment department of NMMC said that similar measures will be intensified in the future.

Last week, the civic body had demolished a couple of structures which were constructed illegally.
