Mumbai : The civic-run BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central reported its first cadaver donation on Thursday after a 16-year-old girl gave a new lease of life to two people, who were suffering from end-stage kidney failure, by donating both her kidneys. With this, the city has reported 36 cadaver donations so far this year.
The donor’s father gave his consent for the donation of both her kidneys to the doctor’s team at Nair hospital. Following this, one of her kidneys went to a 31-year-old woman from Jupiter hospital whereas the other kidney went to a 49-year-old woman from Bombay hospital.
The deceased was admitted to Nair hospital after she fell from the terrace of her home and suffered a major head injury. Following her admission, the doctors had started immediate treatment, but owing to the swelling in her head, her condition deteriorated. The young girl breathed her last at the hospital owing to the head injury and a stroke.
Following this, she was declared brain-dead after doctors checked her multiple times to ensure that she was indeed a brain-dead patient. After this, the girl’s father was counselled about organ donation and explained about the entire process. Though the father was hesitant in the beginning about organ donation, he agreed and gave his written consent for donation after gaining knowledge about the process and its importance.
