Garbage issue has become a problem for the Railways. Every year, the officials clean the railway tracks and the drains of muck and debris. This garbage is then dumped far away from the city. However, an open space near Ram Mandir station has turned into a dumping ground of sorts.

Sources claim that over the last four years, garbage has been piling up here. The Western Railway (WR) is working towards clearing this muck and debris at a cost of Rs 2 crore. “Debris and muck was being dumped on this open plot for a while now. Even though it used to be removed time again, it started accumulating and now it has turned into a huge heap. This will now be transported to Bhayander and Virar,” said a WR official.

As part of the pre-monsoon work and for the smooth operation of the trains during the monsoon, the Railways undertook cleaning of culverts, desilting of drains, installation of high power pumps, maintenance of infrastructure, and so on. But the muck and garbage collected during this cleaning process was cleared and removed with the help of special muck trains.

JCBs have been deployed to clear the muck. Earlier this year, the authorities cleared 3.8 lakh cubic meters of muck and garbage. Over 2.1 lakh cubic meters was cleared from Andheri, Borivali, Jogeshwari, Dahisar and Mira Road, while 1.7 lakh cubic meters was cleared along the Central line.
