Mumbai: A shocking video showing a woman being physically assaulted inside a Central Railways Mumbai division local train's handicapped coach has gone viral on social media, igniting widespread outrage and raising serious concerns over the misuse of reserved compartments and the safety of female commuters.
In this regard, a case under relevant sections of the BNS has been registered at Kalyan GRP and later forwarded to the Kurla GRP for further investigation, as the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Kurla GRP.
The disturbing incident, captured in a 1-minute-14-second video, shows a male passenger aggressively confronting and striking a woman inside the handicapped coach of a local train operating between CST and Ambernath. Despite attempts by fellow passengers to intervene, the man continued his assault, prompting thousands of users online to demand swift action.
In response to a complaint posted on the social media platform X on May 19, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Central Railways Mumbai Division, acknowledged the incident and confirmed that it took place on May 16 inside the handicapped compartment of a local train.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim—a differently-abled woman—boarded the train at Kanjurmarg station at around 9:12 PM, intending to travel to Titwala. During the journey between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup, a man, who was reportedly not eligible to travel in the reserved compartment, entered the coach and became involved in a verbal altercation with the woman over seating. The argument soon turned violent, with the man allegedly hitting her before disembarking at Mumbra station with a family member.
The woman continued her journey and got off at Titwala, where she later filed a complaint. The RPF Inspector at Titwala, along with officials from Mumbra and the Government Railway Police (GRP), has since been coordinating efforts to identify the accused using CCTV footage from various stations.
“Taking immediate cognizance of the matter, authorities have launched a full investigation. We are working closely with the victim and ensuring all legal procedures are followed to bring the perpetrator to justice,” stated the RPF in its post on X.
