Mumbai: Overnight heavy spells of rain on several areas in the city virtually halted all traffic movement on Monday, leading to huge traffic snarls across the city, adding to Mumbaikars' Monday blues. Moreover, flights to and from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were delayed by 35 minutes owing to heavy rain and low visibility, said an official.
Traffic officials said, the heavy downpour over the weekend resulted in waterlogging at various spots in the city. Due to waterlogging, the Malad subway was closed for vehicular movement and the traffic was diverted to SV Road via Datta Mandir Road-Western Express Highway. Similarly, the Andheri subway was also closed and the traffic was diverted via Gokhale bridge and Thackeray bridge.
A senior traffic policeman said, "Andheri seems to be particularly hit by waterlogging and commuters travelling to or through the suburb. Mumbai Police's Twitter handle promptly posted the alerts on waterlogging reported at various places. Meanwhile, traffic on Gandhi Market road was diverted from Bhau Daji Road to Sulochana Shetty Road and traffic from National College on Link road in Bandra (W) was diverted on SV Road. Due to the rains, traffic was moving slow on Pedder road and water logging was reported at Magathane junction, Natraj Market.
Besides traffic movement being badly hit due to water logging at SV Road Andheri Subway junction and the entire Western Express Highway (WEH), roads leading to Lokmanya Tilak Ganesh Visarjan Talao and Saki Naka junction in Andheri (E), Postal Colony near Bhavans College junction in Andheri (W), Durga Nagar junction near JVLR, Bahar junction, Behram Baug junction and DN Nagar saw a similar fate of huge traffic snarls.
