Mumbai: At least 23 persons were arrested and 13 women rescued in the early hours of Friday by the Pant Nagar police during a crackdown on an illegal orchestra bar. The police said they received a tip-off around 11.15pm on Thursday, after which they raided Ghungroo Bar and Restaurant, located in Vallabhbhai Lane at Ghatkopar.

The crackdown was conducted by the social service branch of Mumbai Police, along with the Pant Nagar police at 3.25 am. “We received the tip-off saying the bar is unlicensed and there were women who were hired illegally,” said an official.

Owner absconding

The 23 arrests include those working at the bar as managers, cashiers, waiters and orchestra artists, along with 13 customers were found inside. Meanwhile, bar owner Santosh Shetty is currently absconding and the police have launched a manhunt to nab him. During the raid, the police also seized a total of Rs35,760 cash and computer equipment.

“There are many such illegal establishments in the city which we are trying to capture. Citizens should report to the police if they find such bars or parlours which are running without authorisation,” added the official.

An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance in Hotels, Restaurants, and Bar Rooms and Protection of Dignity of Women (working therein) Act, 2016.
