Mumbai: A 43-year-old man, an accused under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was recently granted bail. However, he was arrested by Mumbai police for violating COVID-19 protocols as he carried out a procession to celebrate his bail.
The accused identified as Shahbuddin Munnavar Ali Idrisi alias Babu Chaddi, a resident of Shastri Nagar slum in Govandi, was released from Taloja prison on June 23.
Soon after he was released from the prison, he went below the Baiganwadi skywalk bridge in Govandi where all his supporters had gathered. The instance happened at around 3 pm on June 23, said Deonar police officials.
Idrisi then carried out a procession in the area along with 15 of his supporters, a video of which went viral. In the video, he was being garlanded by his supporters. “The video clearly shows Idrisi greeting locals and celebrating his comeback in the locality,” said a police officer from Deonar police station.
On July 2, after the video went viral the Deonar police registered a case under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian penal code. "We registered a case and had arrested him for violating COVID-19 norms and carrying out a procession with supporters. They all were gathered without wearing a mask. The accused was later released on bail. He has an history of cases at Shivaji Nagar police station," said S. Agawane, senior police inspector, Deonar police station.
Idrisi, Deonar police officials said, has 21 cases of attempt to murder, assault among others registered against him.
