Mumbai: A day after a mother-daughter duo, identified as Tehseen Hussain (32) and daughter Aaliya (2), was found brutally murdered in a half burnt state at their Mahim residence, police have arrested Tehseen’s husband Ilyas Syed Hussain and his paramour. Police said the murder was premeditated as Ilyas and Afreen Hussain (22) killed and attempted to destroy the evidence. The duo was arrested on Friday morning and were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to police, Ilyas and Afreen, who were first cousins, were in a relationship for the last few months, which led to a rift between the husband-wife. Ilyas had also demanded triple talaq from Tehseen, but she refused as they had two daughters, aged 2 and 5 years. After repeated attempts to get rid of Tehseen went in vain, Ilyas and Afreen allegedly hatched a plan to kill her.

On Wednesday night, the accused duo made a plan to eliminate Tehseen. According to the plan, Ilyas cut his wife’s throat with a knife at around 8.45 am on Thursday. Unfortunately, as Tehseen screamed, their two-year-old daughter Aaliya who was sleeping in the living room woke up and started crying. In a desperate attempt to silence her, Ilyas smothered and slit her throat, killing her on the spot, said police. Ravindra Shisve, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) said, “Aaliya’s murder was not planned and she was killed for no reason.

After killing the duo, Ilyas left the house at 9.15 am and met Afreen at Wadala’s Five Gardens. While Ilyas executed the primary plot of the murder, Afreen went to his residence wearing burqa to execute the other half.” Afreen sent a text message from Tehseen’s mobile phone to Ilyas, which read ‘Hum jaa rahe hai hamesha ke liye’ (we are going away forever), to portray this as a suicide, she burnt the mobile phone after thrashing it. Shisve added, “When the message was received by Ilyas at 10.57 am, he was at his his factory in Wadala, to show she was alive hours after he had left his house for work. Afreen then poured kerosene and edible oil on the bodies and set them ablaze.

To add more to the fury, Afreen switched on cooking gas stove to make it look like a suicide.” All this while, a taxi was waiting for Afreen which she had boarded from Wadala and took the same taxi back home, said a police officer requesting confidentiality.  The incident came to light on Thursday morning at 11.30 am when residents of the 10th floor of the Diamond Apartment in Shahu Nagar saw fumes coming from flat number 1010, which belonged to Ilyas.

When repeated knocks and doorbells went unanswered, the locals broke the door open to find the burning bodies of Tehseen and Aaliya. Tehseen and Ilyas’s elder daughter were at school when her mother and younger sister were killed. mThe accused duo were arrested on Friday and booked under relevant sections of the IPC pertaining to murder (section 302) and destroying evidence (section 201). They would be produced in a local magistrate court on Saturday.
