Mumbai: MRA Marg Police have arrested a driver for killing his colleague for Rs 15 lakh. The driver, Rahul Yadav, has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh.

The deceased, identified as Raghuram Aithal, 73, was initially suspected to be missing, but after Rahul’s arrest, the murder angle came to light. Raghuram, a resident of Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, had been working as an accountant for a South Mumbai-based shipping company, Damini, for the past 30 years.

According to police, on May 13, Raghuram left for Borivli in his company car. He had to deliver Rs 15 lakh to a client at Borivli. Rahul had been working for the company for three years. After leaving office around 3pm that day, Raghuram seemed to have disappeared. Moreover, the client too had never acknowledged receiving the money.

Rahul told his boss he was resigning, as he had to rush to his native place immediately. He did not say anything about Raghuram. The company superiors became suspicious and they registered a missing complaint for Raghuram at the MRA Marg police station.

Since Raghuram was carrying Rs 15 lakh and police though it was likely he could have been attacked. However, they failed to locate him. Rahul had left for Uttar Pradesh (UP) after informing his bosses. MRA Marg Police rushed a team to UP immediately and nabbed Rahul at Prayagraj railway station.

During interrogation, Rahul confessed to killing the accountant. The MRA police team took Rahul to the spot where he had dumped Raghuram’s body. “While in the car, Rahul overheard Raghuram talking to the client about the cash that was in his possession and where they could meet for the cash handover.

When Rahul realised Raghuram had Rs 15 lakh in his possession, his intent turned to murder,” said an officer from the MRA Marg police station. Valiv Police have arrested Rahul under the IPC sections murder (302) , causing disappearance of evidence (201) and punishment for theft (379).
