Mumbai : More than 12,700 Ganesh idols were immersed in the city on Friday, with Mumbaiites bringing home the Lord for a day and a half bidding goodbye to their idols. With the splendour of colour, music and chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’, 12,695 domestic and 11 community idols were immersed in the city.
Of these, 2,401 idols were immersed in temporary ponds constructed by the civic body for the purpose. The other immersion spots are Dadar Chowpatty, Girgaum Chowpatty and Worli. The BMC had appointed life guards and allotted life boats at the three main immersion spots. It also beefed up security around the areas.
Prakash Patil, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, said: “All responsibility of setting up nirmalya kalash, appointing life guards and motor boats and taking care of security has been delegated to respective wards.”
The budget for each ward was sanctioned by the BMC headquarters. However, the ward determines the number of security and life guards or the number of nirmalya kalash.
