Mumbai: A 62-year-old absconding accused was arrested after 36 years by the crime branch unit 7 officials from Jamner town of Jalgaon district on Sunday. The accused, Kayyum alias Shankar Yusuf Khan, was arrested in 1983 on robbery charges. Khan was produced in a local magistrate court on Monday. According to the police, Khan had robbed a shop in Ghatkopar in the year 1983 and was arrested soon after. Khan was granted a conditional bail by a local court.

He was asked to mark his attendance at the police station every month. However, as soon as Khan was granted bail, he fled the city and never returned to mark his attendance. Years later, Khan was declared an absconder and a search operation was initiated to look out for him. Earlier this month, constable Jadhav of crime branch unit 7 received a tip-off that Khan was residing in Jamner town of Jalgaon district, under a fake identity.

Acting on the tip-off, a police team from unit 7 was dispatched to Jamner and located Khan. Interestingly, during his stay in Jamner, police learnt that Khan had contested in the local Gram Panchayat elections and had even won the elections. Further investigations revealed that Khan had several cases of cheating registered against him in Kaul police station of Jalgaon district.

The crime branch officials arrested Khan on Sunday and booked him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to robbery (section 394).  Khan was brought to Mumbai on Monday and was produced in a local magistrate court.
