Mumbai: In a recent RTI report, Mumbai Police published data, citing most number of crime detections of the robbery cases in Mumbai was carried between 2017 and 2018.
In 2017, 671 cases were detected, 78% of the total cases registered. Subsequently, in 2018, 828 cases were detected, 88% of the number cases registered. Mumbai Police admitted they could recover only 36% of the robbed amount (or items) in the specified time.
The data was produced for an RTI application by Shakil Ahmed Shaikh, who asked about the number of robbery cases registered in Mumbai between the 2013-2018. Shaikh believes the installation of CCTV should be helpful in cracking the cases, but there seems to be lack of surveillance.
“There are 5,000 CCTV cameras. Nobody seems to monitor them. Had there been proper surveillance, police could have been more proactive,” said Shaikh.
The lowest detection rate is 71%, recorded in 2015. In the subsequent years, a significant increase had been witnessed in detection rates. “There are between 30-40 officers who keep manual surveillance of the CCTV monitors, supervised by a DCP rank officer. Moreover, the increased detection rates speak volume about the results,” said Manjunath Singe, DCP Operations.
