Mumbai : With the increasing number of attacks on female travellers on Mumbai locals, the authorities have decided to put extra security personnel to ensure safety of women. Two teams of four constables – each from Railway Protection Force (RPF) will now patrol trains departing late at night and early morning hours on Western Railway (WR).

This comes after a 22-year-old girl was allegedly molested in an unguarded moving train last week.

This will be in addition to the Government Railway Police (GRP) constable deployed in the ladies compartment. However, increasing the strength of RPF constables on these trains will only be possible after an additional 600-strong force will be inducted after August 16th.

Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Anand Vijay Jha said, “Two teams will be deployed in each train and they will move about in the trains and keep a tab on miscreants.”  A total of 28 pairs of trains depart between 8 pm and 6 am in which these teams will be deployed. Apart from increasing the

patrolling, there will be more number of constables deployed on railway station, which will increase the visibility of men in uniform.

One can also expect improvement in the punctuality of trains on WR as additional staff will be deployed to curb theft of cables. Additional men will be deployed in areas like Vasai, Virar, Vaitanra and Vapi on Western Railway, which witness several instances of cable theft.

“On an average eight to ten cases of cable theft are reported each month which lead to severe loss of punctuality of trains. These men will be deployed round the clock in these sensitive sections”, added Jha.

Similarly, RPF on Central Railway will also induct an extra force of 600 men. These men will guard extensive Central Railway network and help in improving the security on the trans-harbour line and other neglected section. Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of CR, Sachin Bhalode said, “With these new recruitments the strength of RPF will improve considerably and only a 10% vacancy will still remain.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the RPF arrested Pappu Yada, 19, for molesting the 22-year-old management student on the City local last week.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials identified the accused, Pappu Yadav, with the help of CCTV camera footage. The police said Yadav was drunk when he was arrested and the officials found a liquor bottle and packets of condoms from him.
