Amid a scathing attack by the opposition for lack of distribution of food kit comprising one kg of rawa, edible oil, yellow lentils and sugar for Rs 100, the Maharashtra food and civil supply minister Mr Ravindra Chavan said that these items have been delivered to all rationing shops at the district level by October 19 and 20 and their distribution has begun from today. Mr Chavan said the distribution of food kits was made today at the rationing shop at Kala Chowki in south Mumbai.
‘’Our goal is to make everyone's Diwali sweet. to the media today. In all 1.72 crore eligible beneficiaries from the Antyodaya food scheme and priority family ration card holders as well as eligible APL (orange) and farmer ration card holders will get the benefit of this scheme on the occasion of Diwali,’’ said Mr Chavan.
Mr Chavan defended the state government’s decision saying that it was transparent. ‘’The tender process was implemented in a proper manner. A total of 9 tenders were received out of which 6 companies were qualified, out of which 5 companies participated. The lowest rate in these tenders was Rs 279 which was quoted by the Maharashtra State Coop Consumer Federation Limited Mumbai and it was awarded the contract.
‘’The decision was taken just seven days before, followed by the government machinery taking steps to procure and prepare packets for the eligible ration cardholders. We will ensure more than 50 per cent packets reach each district level distribution official by Saturday evening for sale at fair price shops," Mr Chavan said. He added the scheme entails an expenditure of Rs 486 crore.
"For the first time, the state is trying to give palm oil through fair-price shops. As it comes in liquid form, the government officials decided to take extra precautions while packing the kit so that it does not spill onto other items," Mr Chavan said.
