Maharashtra minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Gulabrao Patil kicked up a controversy by comparing the roads in his constituency in Jalgaon district to actor Hema Malini's cheeks, but later apologised for the remark as the state women's commission strongly objected to it.
Maharashtra Minister for Water Supply and Sanitation and Shiv Sena leader Gulabrao Patil, on Sunday stoked a controversy after he compared roads in his constituency in Dharangaon in Jalgaon district to the cheeks of Bollywood star and BJP MP Hema Malini, suggesting they were smooth and devoid of any potholes.
At a poll rally in Bodwad, Patiltargeted his political rival Eknath Khadse, saying those who served as legislator for over three decades should visit his Dharangaon constituency. “They should see the development that I have carried out.If you don’t find the roads in Dharangaon like the cheeks of Hema Malini, I would resign,’’ he said.
Countering Patil’s claim, Khadse said he was elected from the Dharangaon assembly constituency for 30 years and worked hard for its development. “I never lost any election and people know my contribution,’’ he noted.
However, Patil’s remarks evoked strong reactions from the ruling and opposition parties, especially from women leaders. Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar condemning Patil’s remarks demanded an apology and warned of legal action.
“It is reprehensible for Gulabrao Patil to make such a statement being a responsible people’ representative.” The BJP, which also criticised Patil, said his comments denigrated the women and announced that it will file a police complaint against him.
Navneet Rana, an independent MP from Amravati, threatened that if Patil did not apologise, he would be given a befitting reply. ‘’Patil should tender an apology to Hema Malini and women in general,’’ she demanded. Hours after strong protest, Patil tendered an apology. ''I had made a statement about roads in a programme at Bodewad in Jalgaon district. It was with the intention of having good roads. But my statement was distorted. I apologise if my statement has hurt anyone's feelings.''
