Bhayandar: Intense water logging was reported from low lying areas, as the twin-city of Mira Bhayandar received a record quantum of rainfall which exceeded more than half its anticipated July quota in the first two opening days of the month itself.
While the average rain for July is 650 mm, the twin-city has already received 375 mm in the last 24 hours (from July 1, 10 am to till Tuesday morning. Expressing satisfaction ovee managed to the much criticised de-silting operations, MBMC chief Balaji Khatgaonkar,
“Despite quantum of rainfall breaking all records, we have managed to keep situation under control. Our entire disaster management team is on high alert to tackle any case of emergency.”
Apart from pulling out occupants of a car which was stuck in the creek waters of Chena village in Kashimira, the fire brigade personnel used fiber boats to rescue people nine people who were stranded in the Silver Sarita and Amisha Park area of Mira Road.
The main road from Uttan fish market to Pali remained waterlogged as rains battered the coastal areas. Villagers who were seen ferrying small fishing boats on the inundated roads, have blamed massive illegal constructions and rampant reclamation of natural water bodies coupled by sludge from the dumping yard mixing with rainwater for the disaster. As a precautionary measure, power supply to various localities had been shut down.
