They have already confessed to 10 cases of house break-ins from Bhandup area and  it is likely that they have committed similar crimes in Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg

Mumbai : In a major breakthrough, the Bhandup police have nabbed a gang of four people who used to take advantage of the fact that people are out of town for vacations, and used to commit house break-ins in many areas of the eastern suburbs.

According to deputy police commissioner, Dr Vinay Rathod, there were several cases of break-ins that were reported in this area since the last few days and people had been complaining to the police about this.  “After making a lot of efforts, we managed to get the information that the culprits responsible for these crimes are hiding in Kalwa, Diva and Ambernath and the police started to make efforts to track them.

Their efforts met with success when they arrested four persons, who have been identified as Vicki Pujari,  Chandan Singh, Jai Pujari and Sonu Richard from Nahur railway station. “We had formed two teams for arresting these criminals and after their arrest we managed to get their tools of trade, which included a cutter, screw drivers and some other material. Also, 50 grams of stolen goods has been recovered from them so far,” he added.

The officer said that some of these accused persons have stayed in the eastern suburbs and hence know the geography of the place quite well. “We got the first clue when we checked some CCTV footage that was recovered from a place and our police staff identified one of them,” Rathod said.

“They have already confessed to 10 cases of house break-ins from Bhandup area and it is likely that they have committed similar crimes in neighbouring suburbs like Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg,” he added. Initial inquiries have also indicated that the accused persons have criminal records and the police is making detailed inquiries into their backgrounds, he said.

Police sources said that there are several such gangs that are operating in various parts of the city and suburbs and target houses that are locked. A lot of people go on vacation during this period and such thieves get accurate information on houses that are locked for long periods.”Some of them are hand in glove with the building watchman or even the drivers and other such staff and they break into such houses when they get the opportunity. “While the police is patrolling the areas on a regular basis, it is also for the people to upgrade their security systems so that there is some kind of deterrent on these crimes,” Rathod said.
