Mumbai : The first train with CCTV cameras monitoring the ladies compartments is all set to make its debut on Central Railway (CR) on October 2. A Siemens-make train is being fitted with a total of 10 cameras in its ladies compartments.  The work, undertaken at Kurla workshop, is being done at a cost of Rs 5 lakh.

There will be five ladies compartments — both first class and second class —equipped with the cameras. The train will run both on the slow corridor as well as the fast one.

After the first train, officials will work towards introducing cameras in 50 more coaches following directions from the Railway Board (RB).

These cameras will be attached to a recorder that will record the footage for up to 30 days. This footage will not be monitored by agencies unless a case is registered and the footage is required.

On the other hand, the Western Railway (WR) has completed installation of CCTV cameras in three trains. The work of installing cameras in 50 more coaches is likely to be completed in the next one year.
