Mumbai : In yet another case of drink driving turning gruesome, a mother and daughter were killed after the driver of a car lost control and ran over the duo on a footpath in Dombivli on Tuesday midnight. The incident was recorded in a CCTV installed outside a jewellery shop, which helped the police nab the accused within two hours.
The accused has been identified as Iqbal Nizam Sheikh (24), who was behind the wheels of a white Innova. According to the Ram Nagar police, Sheikh’s car collided with a Skoda car coming from the opposite direction, after which he lost control of his car and drove it onto a footpath, running over killing Meena Kumari (35) and her eight-year-old daughter Pushpa. They were rushed to a local hospital and were declared dead on admission.
After the accident, Sheikh and his friend travelling with him abandoned the car and fled the spot. Following the incident, the police obtained the CCTV footage from Sapna jewellers and arrested the accused. The police have booked Sheikh under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. According to the police, the deceased were beggars and used to live on the footpath.
