Facing a floor test in assembly amid a political crisis in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray submitted his resignation to state Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

The Governor accepted the resignation and asked Uddhav Thackeray to continue as CM until an alternate arrangement is made.

But political crisis is nothing new for the state of Maharashtra.

Since May 1, 1960 - the day on which was then called Bombay State was split up into Marathi-speaking Maharashtra and Gujarat, the state has only seen two chief ministers who have completed their full 5-year-terms.

Who were they?

The first was Vasantrao Naik, who served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 until 1975. To this date, he remains as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

He served a full term, during the period between 1967 to 1972.

A member of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh during 1952-1957, of the then bilingual Bombay State during 1957-1960, and of Maharashtra during 1960 to 1977, he was appointed Deputy Minister for Revenue in the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1952.

After the death of Marotrao Kannamwar, Naik was elected Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a post which he held for more than eleven years during 1963-1975, over the course of three separate terms.

He is considered the father of the Green Revolution in Maharashtra. The industrialization of Maharashtra is largely the legacy of his progressive industrial policies.

The second person was current Maharashtra Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis - the man who is almost certain to be the next chief minister of the state.

Fadnavis took over as the legislative party leader by the BJP MLAs in the presence of the party's central observers, Union Home minister Rajnath Singh and the party's National General Secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda after being elected to the position.

As the leader of the largest party in Maharashtra state assembly, Fadnavis was appointed as the chief minister of Maharashtra on October 31, 2014.

His government won a confidence motion by voice vote on November 12, 2014, allowing it to govern. His government lasted till 2019.

On November 23, 2019, Fadnavis formed a government with the help of Ajit Pawar of NCP; however, this government only lasted for a few days.
