Mumbai : The Mumbai Cyber Cell arrested a cyber cafe owner from Nagpur on charges of cheating by running a fake website. The accused, Granth Mahipal Rane, is a resident of Nagpur and had been duping candidates by promising them education loans.
In August this year, the cyber cell was approached by a marketing manager of a private company that a fake website was being operated under their name. The original company helped deserving candidates acquire education loans and operated two websites on which the candidates contacted them. A minimal processing fee was charged by the company.
The issue came to light when the company was informed by candidates that a fake website sporting the same credentials but different contact details was operational. After investigating, the original company sent a legal notice to the administrators of the fake website but received no reply.
After the complaint was registered, the police investigated the matter and arrested Rane. His modus operandi included communicating with the candidates using the fake website and asking them to deposit an initial registration fee to his account. Once the money was deposited, Rane would cease contacting the candidates and refuse to answer further calls.
