Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will act against the non-government organisations (NGOs) which are providing services to the patients in civic run hospitals as per the contract rule under private public partnership (PPP).
In Malwani hooch tragedy, the victims who were admitted in the BMC’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, Kandivali (West) didn’t get dialysis service on priority basis. As a result many patients lost their lives. The BMC had awarded a contract to Neminath Charitable Trust to run the dialysis center in this hospital.
On Wednesday, a delegation of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) met additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh and submitted him a memorandum in this regard.
“The trust could not help the patients in disaster-like situation. Then, why the trust has been awarded the contract based on nominal rates. Is the trust there only to generate money?” asked Shalini Thackeray, vice president of MNS.
“If the BMC has huge budgetary allocation for health then why is it appointing private agencies to run health services,” asked the MNS office-bearer.
Deshmukh also assured that the BMC would inquire into the matter and initiate action against these NGOs. “However, the BMC is also planning to file a case against the NGOs not providing services as per contract,” Deshmukh said.
